Thank You.

I want to thank you for your support. I appreciate you emails, calls, letters, showing up for the debates, volunteering, your contributions, and your vote. When all the votes have been counted, nearly a thousand people will have supported my common sense, bi-partisan, and “Get the money out of politics” platform. This is amazing to me, since there was zero money spent on advertising or marketing.

I was naïve and started campaigning late but I feel that my supporters and I had the opportunity to show young people and others that democracy is a gift and something we all need to participate in; it is lack of participation that has gotten us into our current mess.

Campaign Finance

America is in trouble.  We are all on the Titanic. The problem is our political system. Our democracy no longer represents the people but answers to those who give our politicians money:  the 1%, the hyper-wealthy, and the lobbyists.

The politicians would like us to buy their story that the other party is the problem. It’s not! Both parties are on the take. They are both taking cash from the very entities they are supposed to regulate. This is unethical!

And yet we continue to vote for the same politicians, over and over again – the ones who have the money wield the influence, but much of their money comes from the companies to which they give tax breaks and special favors. I don’t understand why my opponents need hundreds of thousands of dollars to run a campaign.  Why can’t our positions speak for themselves?  Please look at my platform, compare my positions to theirs, then decide who you want to support.

The system is rigged. We taxpayers give 14 billion dollars to 6 multi-national food corporations who bribe our politicians to sell fat, sugar, and salt at below-market prices. The result of this is that one in three children born after the year 2000 will develop diabetes and children of that generation will not live as long as their parents!

Cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and strokes were previously rare or nonexistent. In the last one hundred years, our “brilliance” and our greed have put us on a trajectory that is unsustainable. We are now like the cartoon character, Wily Coyote, in Roadrunner, who has run off a cliff and has just realized that he’s about to meet a tragic end.

And Obama and the Democrats have been just as clueless as the Republicans.  We are on the Titanic and we need to change course.  The alarm bells are getting louder and louder.  I propose that we rapidly pass a new constitutional amendment that says:

“Congress and the Executive Branch, in all their actions, will strive to recreate a biosphere like the one that existed when this country was founded.”

This topic is painful.  Who hasn’t had their heart broken at what is happening to Our Mother Earth?  Remember Joni Mitchell’s song about how they “paved paradise and put up a parking lot?”

Drug Policy

Our drug policy is not working.  We spend billions on a “drug war” that leads to children having easy access to drugs, to 90% of active drug addicts receiving no treatment, and to countries like Mexico being taken over by narcotics gangs. I propose a comprehensive overhaul of our drug laws.

Today, Americans are selling guns to Mexico that end up in the hands of drug gangs that use the guns to fight the Mexican government. Today, secondhand smoke kills over 50,000 people a year. Today, we are failing to prevent addiction in children. Today, over half of all prisoners in jails and prisons are there because of crimes involving drugs. Today, millions of untreated addicts rob and kill to get drug money — they kill and molest our kids when they’re high. Today, right now, someone is trying to figure out a way to offer your child addictive drugs.

Energy Sustainability

For the sake of Earth and for the sake of our children, we must become sustainable quickly.  We could have started this in the 1960′s. I am proposing the following Constitutional Amendment to halt the destruction of Earth:

“Congress and the Executive Branch, in all their actions, will strive to recreate a biosphere like the one that existed when this country was founded.”

Real Democrats and Real Republicans

We need to evolve to a post-partisan perspective.  Both parties have their strengths but they both need to grow up, stop the bickering, stop selling their influence, and rapidly come together and fix some BIG problems with common-sense solutions.

We have a great system. America got it right, over two hundred years ago. A sane, Democratic government, elected by sane voters, is the ultimate political system. Our institutions are sound. Our Constitution has worked well. The two-party system seems, by and large, to be a good arrangement. We are a proud, strong, and brave country. But we are human and we have our faults. Over the years, we have endorsed some ignorant practices, including terrorizing and enslaving the original Americans, and denying women equal rights. But we changed. We have made progress in some areas, and we have seriously messed up in others. And now, it’s time for another change.

The Economy

We need a balanced budget and a prudent reserve for a rainy day.  What is so hard to understand about this?

The Iraq war is an example.  Who starts a war without good reason?  Our leaders started two wars and put the expenses on a credit card.  The Iraq war cost roughly a trillion dollars.  Who paid for it?  Our leaders expect their children to pay for it!  They are not only greedy, but they are shortsighted.

We have been fools; we have been sweet-talked by greedy politicians.  But we are waking up to a game that is as old as mankind:  the rich and the privileged rig the system in their favor; the underdogs work for them.  Things have always been this way. Nature whittles the species through survival of the fittest – the strong and favored thrive, and the weak and less fortunate get the leftovers.  Today 400 Americans have more wealth than 150 million Americans!  These members of the oligarchy got that way because they have skewed the system in their favor.

All of us are saddened when we think about how our country manages education.

We see the bumper stickers:

“It will be a great day when our schools get all the money they need and the Air Force has to hold a bake sale to buy a bomber.”

Children need to be our first priority. Each of us becomes the person we are because of what happened in the critical, first 18 months of our lives. And the next critical three years. And every year, until we become adults. Every successful mammal prioritizes childcare, even at the risk of being killed to protect his or her young.

Today, in Marin and Sonoma, we are dumping tons of deadly chemicals into our Bay. We are treating Mother Nature like an Ashtray! We can restore Mother Nature to the condition it was hundreds of years ago, if it mattered to us. And it must matter to us.

Sustainability. This word needs to be on our lips a lot if we want our children to inherit the planet our parents and grandparents gave us. One hundred years ago, we humans had a much smaller footprint on the planet. We have fouled our lands and waters and we need to fix it.
